Cross in Vabaduse Valjak: A Shameful MIstake

>

Ashamed of living in Estonia, that is how I felt when I finally left the sexy shop in Tatari street behind my shoulders and I made my triumphant entrance in Vabaduse valjak.

The purpose of tmy visit was simple: go, see it, take picture and quotes and build a nice report about the event a lot of people has been waiting for since quite a while now.
The surprise is that the outcome turned to be far less than miserable.

My quotes, pictures and report have in fact been replaced by such a deep anger that I did not even know I could feel before this absurd moment.

While writing these lines I witness the opening ceremony of a monument that makes Estonia look like a Lemmings country than an European one.
A tall concrete stick covered by glass is used as a pillar for keeping above of our nobles heads a cross that would make look the swords put by Saddam Hussein at the entrance of Baghdad a state-of-art celebration of taste.

Honestly, it is really hard to put down this small article now, especially as I feel obliged to measure each and every word as – unfortunately – I will never be allowed to write what I think and what I hope will soon happen to the monster our beloved government desired from the bottom of the State budget.

Kick in the eye for all the people who will happen to cross Freedom square, the absurd nothing inaugurated today, has only one point in its favour. Its being temporary.

Because I cannot seriously imagine this violent and tastless “thing” able to last.
I do not know if something will happen because of a lack of funds, because of a too patriotic Estonian or a pissed Russian but what I expect – and, why not, I also hope and encourage – is that someone will do what any mentally sane individual would do: try to bring it down.

Today, after I jumped in Vabaduse valjak, I immediately decided to run back to my place and try to forget about this shameful event I had the unluck to witness, but I cannot stop thinking that in another country Andrus Ansip would have never been allowed to partecipate to the event.

Because in another country people would have smashed that cross right against his head. Even before making him understand the absurd waste of money this tower of shit costs and the way he turned Estonia in something in between a sad joke and a begger.

I am not used to say that but I think you are a bit too negative ;)

Honestly, when the works started I was also quite pessimistic about the "panorama". Even though (you see they dont only say that in songs!) it s slightly hiding Kiek in de Koek, the restauration has been very nice. Remember there was here an old ugly parking which was not highlithing the entrance of the old town.
I havent seen the final result (except now on TV) but I have a bit changed my mind.

As an historical reminder, the idea of this monument dates back to 1936 and the cross is the Freedom Cross, the most prestigious decoration created in 1919. It is a good sign that Estonians remember their past and they now have a monument dedicated to Freedom which was actually their biggest fight all along their history. It is definitely a big symbol for all of them.

We'll see what tourists think about it... prepare your interviews :)
